Watches Elgin was founded in 1864 under the name “National Watch Company.” His first pocket watch appeared in 1867 under the name of BW Raymond rail. In 1874 changed its name to “Elgin National Watch Company” because it commonly in the market are known as the Elgin watches, referring to the place it was in the factory. The first wrist watch Elgin comes to market in 1910. The watch company ceases to exist at the end of 1960 and again changed its name to “Elgin National Industries.” It is estimated that throughout its history produced about 60 million watches. Watch Elgin was the pioneer in the production of pocket watches of high quality, using interchangeable parts made by machines. Most of the time clocks were made manually, so it was down to the very difficult and costly to find someone with the tools and knowledge necessary to make a new party. To this must be your success and Elgin have come to be together with Waltham, clearly dominated the segment in the market watchmaker half of the season in the United States.
In 1864, at the height of the American Civil War, there was a strong demand for watches, and several new companies with manufacturing of watches and watch were founded.
The National Watch Company, of Elgin, Illinois, was formed on August 27, 1864 with a capital of $ 100,000. Partners: Philo Carpenter, Z. Howard Culver, Benjamin W. Raymond, George M. Wheeler, Thomas S. Dickerson, Edward H. Williams and W. Robbins.
The initial capital of the company was made by Mr. Raymond Benjamin, a former mayor of Chicago, and the company was founded in August 1864. The factory was in Elgin, Illinois, on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago. This site was chosen in part because it was well located near Chicago Union Railroad, one of the largest railroad in Chicago.
In September 1864 a visit by some company representatives to the Waltham Watch Co. and seven of its top people were hired. The proposal being made was $ 5000 a year for 5 years’ salary and a bonus of $ 5,000 plus an acre of land from the company before being acquired, Elgin lost several of the so-called Seven Stars a few years later in 1869.
In 1874, the company name changed to Elgin National Watch. The company grew rapidly and soon became the main competitor of Waltham watches.
By 1876 the company could produce more than 2,000 finished watches and movements in a working week of 60 hours. In 1873, she submitted her first wind-Elgin stem. The first wristwatch was produced in 1910.
Watches for men did not leave the market until the year 1916.
Elgin never watches cheap manufactures dominated by the “One Dollar One Clock” but on the contrary always stressed by their watches quality This culminated in the production, in 1922, his model “Hulburd”
The Model Hulburd available Rubis, 19, were the thinnest watches produced to date, and are intended for the presentation in the market. The boxes of these clocks were unique and no 2 are exactly alike
In 1943, Elgin won a contract with the Navy of the United States to produce 3000 timers for warships at a cost of 541 dollars per instrument. In the year 1944, the numbers 1 and 3 were delivered to conduct the tests by the Naval Observatory, however, The Elgin timers, never entered service since the contract was canceled. The number 1 was given to the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, for its exhibit, and others that had already been built were sold to the public.
After 1945 the company began to lose its dominant position. In 1950, Elgin bought the Wadsworth Watch “Enterprise Funds clock construction in order to ensure supplies for their watches.
Although Elgin now owns the company, allowed to continue under its own management team led by Arthur Wadsworth.
In 1952, 5 years before the famous march from Hamilton, Elgin announced the creation of its first electric wristwatch. The model was a prototype and, unfortunately, the development of the prototype to be turned into a production model took 10 years and by the time he was ready for production had already been entered in 1962, Elgin had lost the initiative in the electronic clocks and the clock was no longer in production. The company launched its famous and legendary “Lord Elgin” of which few copies were made and today we are very sought after by collectors ..
The company continued to produce watches for men to the Year 1964. In 1966 the company hill with the demolition of its iconic clock tower
